Five Free Festive Things to do in London with the Kids

Bright lights, big city! Is there anywhere more exciting than the UK’s capital at Christmas time? Why not take your little adventurers along on a trip to London and soak up the festivities, with our fun guide to what’s on for free, during the most wonderful time of the year.

Southbank put on a Winter Festival between November 3rd and January 8th, complete with beautifully illuminated trees all along Queens Walk. Take a stroll right next to the river Thames and take in the sights and sounds of the Christmas markets, a series of wooden clad chalets decked in twinkling lights. Best seen after dark, this enchanting walk will also treat you to some of London’s most iconic sights including Big Ben and The London Eye. Look out for free entertainment in the form of the infamous bubble man, music, DJ’s art sessions and cosy community lounge.

Take a nighttime trip down Oxford Street - a sight to behold, these spectacular illuminations certainly light up this iconic London shopping street. With so many flagship stores along this stretch, you will also be treated to some magnificent window displays, all trimmed up with festive themes.

Hyde Park's famous fair returns for another year between the 18th November 2022 and the 2nd January 2023. From ‘ride if you dare’ attractions, spectacular shows, Santaland and tempting seasonal food and drink, there’s something on offer for all ages. Whilst there is a charge for these add-on attractions, did you know that if you book an ‘off peak’ ticket then entry is absolutely free. So, if you’re not a hardcore Thrillseeker, you can simply take a stroll through this wonderful wonderland and soak up the atmosphere for absolutely nothing.  Remember, as this is a ticketed entry, all tickets must be pre booked online in advance - even the free off-peak tickets.

Get some good gift ideas for letter writing to Santa and make sure they earn a place on the nice list with a walk around Selfridges magical toy shop, set on level 4 of this world-famous department store, where you will be greeted by life sized toy soldiers. Serve up a good old slice of nostalgia with the giant ‘dance-on piano’ (anyone remember the scene from 80’s movie Big?), a fun interactive experience that everyone will enjoy. There’s also a child sized toy rocket ship immersive experience to discover as well as a giant clock tower that comes alive on the hour with music, animated soldiers and working gears and cogs.

Wishing for a white Christmas? Then don’t despair. Covent Garden is making dreams come true in the run up to the festivities with a daily snowfall display that’s not only completely enchanting, but sustainable too. Head to the stunning, pedestrianised Piazza, also home to 115,000 twinkling lights and London’s largest hand-picked Christmas tree, for a flurry of snowfall every hour between 12pm and 9pm, up until the 31st December.

We hope you enjoyed this little guide and have fun enjoying the festivities on offer, whatever your plans this season.
